Year-by-year, uniforms are becoming more of a common necessity in high schools all around the world. In countries like Canada and the United States, most catholic schools enforce some sort of school-wide uniform. Although it is quite ubiquitous, school uniforms seem to have a poor reputation among students for various reasons. On the other hand, a small percentage of students with abnormal conditions look at the uniform as something that should be appreciated and remain a constant in high school. This persistent debate between non-uniform clothing and school uniforms are becoming a common issue for high school students. Compared to non-uniform clothing, school uniforms have greater benefits for students in high schools as they ease morning routines, prevent bullying, and help save money.
School uniforms are more beneficial than non-uniform clothing for students in high school as they ease morning routines. If high schools had no uniforms, students would have greater difficulty in an already busy morning schedule. For instance, students must worry about hygiene, making breakfast, eating breakfast, picking out a wardrobe, and arriving at school all within about an hours’ time. On the other hand, if highs schools have uniforms, students can eliminate the portion of their routine where they choose their clothing and can simply just put on the same clothes they wore the previous day.
Since they ease morning routines, school uniforms have greater benefits compared to non-uniform clothing because students can use time in the morning to study for a test or to complete homework. School uniforms have greater benefits compared to non-uniform clothing for students in high school as the prevent bullying. One of the main factors of bullying in teenagers is clothing. 14% of children and teenagers aged 12-20 were targeted because of their clothing (The Annual Bullying Survey 2015: UK Bullying Statistics 2015). Contrarily, school uniforms mean every student is wearing the exact same outfit, which eliminates any opportunities for differences and reasons for discrimination.
Since they prevent bullying, school uniforms are more beneficial than non-uniform clothing because they allow students to focus less on what others think and concentrate on school, which can increase academic success and reduce stress. School uniforms have greater benefits in comparison to non-uniform clothing for students in high schools as they help save money. Depending on the brand or store, clothes can be quite expensive for an adolescent who most likely does not work. As an example, for a basic outfit from clothing store American Eagle, which consist of a shirt, jeans, and shoes, prices can range upwards to $300. This number can ultimately double or even triple depending how much the student purchases. By comparison, school uniforms are only purchased once or twice in a student’s high school career, which only amounts to half the price of non-uniform clothing.
According to a survey done by the National Association of Elementary School Principles (NAESP), 77 percent believe the average cost of school uniforms per year, was $150 or less (National Survey of School Leaders Reveals 2013 School Uniform Trends). Since they help save money, school uniforms are more beneficial than non-uniforms clothing because the money students can save from having the uniform can be used towards future necessities and crucial elements in life. For example, a house and a car all start with savings and good spending habits as a teenager.
As it eases morning routines, prevents bullying, and helps save money, school uniforms most definitely have greater benefits compared to non-uniform clothing. Even if they do not realize it now, the school uniforms benefit students more than they want to believe. Once one puts on the uniform, the pride does not feel the same without it.
